On Tuesday, Maggie Haberman of The New York Times reported that Senate Republicans struck a “deal” with Donald Trump Jr., agreeing to his demands to comply with the subpoena by the Senate Intelligence Committee:
It is unclear what the Intelligence Committee stands to gain from making this deal, as the law clearly requires Trump Jr. comply with the subpoena unconditionally. But the committee’s chairman, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), has been under intense pressure from allies of President Donald Trump for issuing the subpoena.
Heightened scrutiny has fallen on Trump Jr. as a result of his prior testimony to Congress that he had extremely limited involvement in the proposed Trump Tower Moscow deal. Subsequent evidence, including from the president’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen, flatly contradicts what he said under oath.
