Senate Democrats on Sunday blocked action on an emerging deal to prop up an economy devastated by the coronavirus pandemic, paralyzing the progress of a nearly $2 trillion government rescue package they said failed to adequately protect workers or impose strict enough restrictions on bailed-out businesses.

The party-line vote was a stunning setback after three days of fast-paced negotiations between senators and administration officials to reach a bipartisan compromise on legislation that is expected to be the largest economic stimulus package in American history — now expected to cost $1.8 trillion or more. In a 47-to-47 vote, the Senate fell short of the 60 votes that would have been needed to advance the measure, even as talks continued behind the scenes between Democrats and the White House to salvage a compromise.

There’s a good article in The Atlantic on the powers that a President may have after the declaration of a national emergency:

>Nonetheless, some legal scholars believe that the Constitution gives the president inherent emergency powers by making him commander in chief of the armed forces, or by vesting in him a broad, undefined “executive Power.” At key points in American history, presidents have cited inherent constitutional powers when taking drastic actions that were not authorized—or, in some cases, were explicitly prohibited—by Congress. Notorious examples include Franklin D. Roosevelt’s internment of U.S. citizens and residents of Japanese descent during World War II and George W. Bush’s programs of warrantless wiretapping and torture after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Abraham Lincoln conceded that his unilateral suspension of habeas corpus during the Civil War was constitutionally questionable, but defended it as necessary to preserve the Union.

The Chinese have given up on containing the virus. They have decided to let the virus spread through their population and let the chips fall where they will. This is why the Chinese expelled The Washington Post, The Times and the Wall Street Journal. With what is coming they do not want the press around to see the body bags and other things. Simply put unless a vaccine is developed this is the storm. China has already passed over a million dead and after that what is the point in counting. The Chinese are lying about things not to deceive the west but to try and hold their own country together long enough for something to change. If the Chinese people understood there is no cure and no real way to stop the biological weapon their scientists and the Russians created. Well I will let you use your imagination. The problem is this weapon mutates and each new solution only results in only dealing with an increasingly small subset in the epidemic. The Chinese, Americans, and Russians are working behind the scenes to keep things under control and the lies and noble. There is far more a stake here than the truth. The increasing danger now is with the pandemic reaching dangerous levels in the U.S. someone will become unhinged and doing something unsound.

One of my friends got infected. He's a 26 year old healthy guy. He's always been super fucking tough, never cared about anything dangerous (probably how he caught it). I've known him since 3rd grade and he's never been terribly sick, doesn't smoke or do drugs, and is the spitting image of perfect health. He's a strong motherfucker.

I just talked to him and he's scared shitless. Doctors finally told him to come in because he can barely breath, and he said it feels like his lungs are on fire, like "every breath of air is full of tiny glass shards." He's also been coughing small amounts of blood.

This dude is a fucking tank and this virus has wrecked his lungs. He said he never felt anything like this before.

I used to be on the "it's just a flu bro" train but this shit seriously seems different. I am staying inside until this is under control.
