You couldn't tell it by looking but these two old guys in the photo were warriors who went through World War II together. They were both assigned to the 101st Airborne Division Headquarters Company, they both went into Normandy, France on D-Day (June 6, 1944) in a Horsa glider, my father as a bazooka operator and his compatriot - Gamble - as his loader, experienced combat together, and, captured at the same time, both spent the remainder of the war in German prison camps, to be liberated by the Russians in January, 1945.
Sadly, both are dead now. But the stories they could have shared ...
