Scary scrotum

A 43-year-old man from Panama did nothing for three decades until his massively swollen, rotting, pus-oozing and foul-smelling scrotum — that hung down past his knees — finally brought him to a team of Texas doctors for treatment. When admitted, the patient, who had been getting around with a walker and whose mother (a saint) looked after his daily needs, had a fever of 102.2° F (39° C) and two open wounds in his scrotum. The physicians immediately operated to try to remove the rotting flesh. Following intravenous antibiotics, they removed his left testicle and scrotum, then later Read more

Scientists often hope to break ground with their research. But a group of Australian researchers would likely be happy with breaking wind. The team developed an ingestible electronic capsule to monitor gas levels in the human gut. When it’s paired with a pocket-sized receiver and a mobile phone app, the pill reports tail-wind conditions in real time as it passes from the stomach to the colon. The researchers, led by Kourosh Kalantar-Zadeh of RMIT University and Peter Gibson of Monash University, reported their invention Monday in Nature Electronics. Read more Read more

It was a case that had doctors baffled. When a 72-year-old patient turned up at A&E coughing blood and complaining he was struggling to breathe, medics ran tests for possible chest infections, pneumonia and even throat cancer. The problem, an X-ray eventually revealed, was rather more obscure: the man had breathed in his own false teeth and they were lodged in his larynx. Doctors deduced the patient had inhaled his dentures eight days earlier while under anaesthetic during an unrelated operation to remove a benign lump from his abdomen. Read more Read more

"How sick," Linda Kajma said to herself, before venturing through the rest of the house in search of her missing cousin. It was Thanksgiving weekend and 80-year-old Sally Honeycheck, who for decades lived in a run-down Detroit neighborhood on Joseph Campau near the Polish Yacht Club, wasn't answering her phone. So Kajma went looking for her, only to discover that her Read more
